How to Calculate Paver Area
Measuring the area for a paver project — patio, walkway, or driveway — requires care to ensure accurate material estimates. Here's how to measure common shapes.
Rectangular Areas
Multiply length × width:
Area = length × width
A 15 × 12 ft patio = 180 sq ft.
L-Shaped Areas
Divide into two rectangles, calculate each, and add:
- Section 1: 12 × 10 = 120 sq ft
- Section 2: 6 × 4 = 24 sq ft
- Total: 144 sq ft
Circular Areas
For a circular patio, use:
Area = π × radius²
A 10 ft diameter circle: π × 5² = 78.5 sq ft.
Curved or Irregular Areas
For irregular shapes, use the "bounding rectangle" method: measure the largest rectangle that fits inside the shape, then estimate the remaining areas. Add 20% waste for curved cuts.
Don't Forget the Slope
Paver surfaces should slope away from buildings at 1/4" per foot for drainage. This doesn't change the area calculation, but it affects the base material depth (deeper on the high side).
Use the Calculator
Once you have the area, use the Paver Calculator to estimate paver quantity. For base material, use the Gravel Calculator.
