Paver Calculator form

ft

Length of the patio, walkway, or driveway.

ft

Width of the area to pave.

in

Length of one paver. Common: 4", 6", 8", 12", 16", 24".

in

Width of one paver. Common: 4", 6", 8", 12", 16", 24".

%

Extra for cuts, breakage, edges. Straight-lay: 10%. Diagonal/herringbone: 15%.

How this calculator works

This paver calculator estimates paver quantity in three steps:

  1. Area: area length × area width (sq ft).
  2. Paver area: (paver length × paver width) / 144 to convert sq in to sq ft.
  3. Pavers needed: ceil(area / paver area), then add waste (default 10%).

The calculator also shows pavers per square foot, which helps estimate material cost quickly.

Formula

area          = area_length × area_width  (sq ft)
paver_area_in = paver_length × paver_width  (sq in)
paver_area    = paver_area_in / 144  (sq ft)
pavers_needed = ceil(area / paver_area)
pavers_waste  = ceil(pavers_needed × (1 + waste_pct / 100))

Example

For a 12 × 10 ft patio (120 sq ft) with 4×8 inch brick pavers, 10% waste:

  • paver_area = (4 × 8) / 144 = 0.222 sq ft
  • pavers_needed = ceil(120 / 0.222) = 541 pavers
  • pavers_with_waste = ceil(541 × 1.10) = 596 pavers

Important assumptions

  • Paver dimensions are NOMINAL — actual size is typically 1/8" smaller. The calculator uses your entered dimensions.
  • Standard waste: 10% for straight-lay, 15% for diagonal/herringbone, 20% for circles or curves.
  • Base material (gravel + sand) is calculated separately — use the Gravel Calculator for base material.
  • Pavers are often sold by the pallet (100-500 pavers depending on size). Check with your supplier.

FAQ

How many pavers do I need for a 10×10 patio?
A 10×10 patio (100 sq ft) with 4×8 brick pavers (0.222 sq ft each) needs ceil(100/0.222) = 451 pavers. With 10% waste: 497 pavers.
How much waste should I add for pavers?
10% for straight-lay patterns, 15% for diagonal or herringbone, 20% for circles or curves. Always order extra — paver dye-lots vary between batches.
How do I calculate pavers per square foot?
Divide 1 by the paver's area in sq ft. A 4×8 paver = 0.222 sq ft → 1/0.222 = 4.5 pavers per sq ft. A 12×12 paver = 1.0 sq ft → 1 paver per sq ft.
What about base material under the pavers?
You need 4-6 inches of gravel base plus 1 inch of sand. Use the Gravel Calculator for base material volume and weight.
