How to Calculate Mulch Depth
Choosing the right mulch depth is important for plant health, weed suppression, and cost. Here's a guide to selecting the right depth for your project.
Standard Mulch Depths
| Application | Depth | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Annual top-dressing (existing mulch) | 2" | Refreshes appearance; existing mulch already suppresses weeds |
| New garden beds | 3" | Standard depth — suppresses weeds, retains moisture |
| Bare soil / weed suppression | 4" | Blocks light completely; prevents weed germination |
| Playground safety surface | 6-12" | Cushions falls (use playground-grade mulch only) |
| Pathway / walkway | 3-4" | Comfortable to walk on; suppresses weeds |
Why Not Deeper?
Mulch deeper than 4 inches around plant stems traps moisture against the bark, causing rot and inviting pests. Keep mulch 2-3 inches away from the base of trees and shrubs (the "donut" method, not the "volcano" method).
Calculating Volume from Depth
Once you've chosen a depth, calculate the volume:
Volume (cu ft) = bed area × (depth in inches ÷ 12)
For a 100 sq ft bed at 3" depth: 100 × (3 ÷ 12) = 25 cu ft = ~13 bags (2 cu ft each).
Mulch Settles
Mulch compacts by 10-20% after the first rain. If you apply 3" of loose mulch, it will settle to about 2.5". The 5% waste factor in the Mulch Calculator accounts for this settling.
