Cubic Yards of Mulch Explained
Mulch is sold in two ways: by the bag (measured in cubic feet) or in bulk (measured in cubic yards). Understanding the conversion helps you compare prices and choose the right quantity.
What Is a Cubic Yard?
A cubic yard is a volume measurement: 3 feet × 3 feet × 3 feet = 27 cubic feet. One cubic yard of mulch covers approximately:
| Depth | Coverage per Cubic Yard |
|---|---|
| 2" | 162 sq ft |
| 3" | 108 sq ft |
| 4" | 81 sq ft |
Converting Bags to Cubic Yards
One cubic yard = 27 cubic feet. The conversion depends on bag size:
| Bag Size | Bags per Cubic Yard |
|---|---|
| 1.5 cu ft | 18 bags |
| 2.0 cu ft (most common) | 13.5 → 14 bags |
| 3.0 cu ft (bulk bags) | 9 bags |
Bagged vs Bulk: Cost Comparison
Bulk mulch is significantly cheaper for large areas. Typical pricing (varies by region):
| Quantity | Bagged (2 cu ft bags) | Bulk (cubic yards) | Savings |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 cu yd (27 cu ft) | $54 ($4/bag × 14) | $30-40/cu yd | 25-45% |
| 2 cu yd (54 cu ft) | $108 | $60-80 | 25-45% |
| 5 cu yd (135 cu ft) | $270 | $150-200 + delivery | 25-45% |
Note: Most bulk suppliers have a 1-2 cubic yard minimum for delivery. A delivery fee ($50-100) may apply.
When Bagged Makes Sense
- Small beds (under 2 cubic yards / 27 bags)
- No access for delivery truck (tight driveway, backyard only)
- You want to spread the work over multiple weekends
- You don't have a wheelbarrow or tarp for bulk spreading
Use the Calculator
The Mulch Calculator shows both bag count and cubic yards, making it easy to compare options. Enter your bed dimensions and depth, then check both numbers.
