How Much Flooring Do I Need?
Whether you're installing laminate, vinyl plank, or hardwood, the calculation follows the same process: measure the room, add waste, and convert to boxes. Here's a quick walkthrough for a typical room.
Quick Calculation
For a standard 12 × 12 ft room with 10% waste and 20 sq ft per box:
- Room area = 12 × 12 = 144 sq ft
- Flooring needed = 144 × 1.10 = 158.4 sq ft
- Boxes = ceil(158.4 ÷ 20) = 8 boxes

Choosing the Right Waste Factor
The waste allowance covers cuts at walls, doorways, and around obstacles. Use this guide:
| Room Type / Pattern | Waste Factor |
|---|---|
| Simple rectangular room, straight-lay | 5-10% |
| Standard room with closets, doorways | 10% (default) |
| Diagonal or herringbone pattern | 15% |
| Large-format tile, uneven subfloor | 15-20% |
| Natural stone with color variation | 20% |
What About Underlayment?
Laminate and some vinyl plank flooring require underlayment (foam padding). Underlayment is sold in rolls covering 100-200 sq ft. Order the same square footage as your room area (no waste needed — underlayment is cut to fit).
For Carpet Specifically
Carpet has a unique calculation because it comes in fixed-width rolls (12 ft or 15 ft). When the room is wider than the roll, you need multiple strips with seams — this creates waste that the general Flooring Calculator doesn't account for. Use the Carpet Calculator for carpet projects.
