How this calculator works
This flooring calculator estimates material needed for a rectangular room in three steps:
- Room area: room length × room width (in sq ft).
- Flooring needed: room area × (1 + waste %). The default 10% covers cuts at doorways, closets, and irregular walls.
- Boxes: if you enter coverage per box, the calculator divides total flooring by box coverage and rounds up.
For carpet specifically, use the Carpet Calculator — it accounts for roll width and seam placement that this general calculator does not.
Formula
room_area = room_length × room_width (sq ft)
sq_yd = room_area / 9
flooring_needed = room_area × (1 + waste_pct / 100)
boxes = ceil(flooring_needed / box_coverage) [if box_coverage > 0]
Example
For a 12 × 10 ft room with 10% waste and 20 sq ft per box:
- room_area = 120 sq ft
- flooring_needed = 120 × 1.10 = 132 sq ft
- boxes = ceil(132 / 20) = 7 boxes
Important assumptions
- Default waste 10% for straight-lay installations with moderate cuts.
- For diagonal or herringbone patterns, increase waste to 15%.
- For natural stone or large-format tile on uneven subfloor, use 20%.
- Box coverage varies by manufacturer — always check the box label.
- This calculator does NOT account for carpet roll width or seam placement. For carpet, use the Carpet Calculator.
FAQ
- How much flooring do I need for a 12×12 room?
- A 12×12 room is 144 sq ft. With 10% waste, you need 158.4 sq ft of flooring — order 160 sq ft (or 8 boxes at 20 sq ft/box).
- How much waste should I add for flooring?
- 10% for standard straight-lay with rectangular rooms. 15% for diagonal or herringbone patterns. 20% for natural stone or large-format tile on uneven subfloor.
- How do I calculate square yards for carpet?
- Divide square feet by 9. A 12×12 room (144 sq ft) = 16 sq yd. For carpet specifically, use the Carpet Calculator — it accounts for roll width that this simple conversion does not.
- What's the difference between this and the Carpet Calculator?
- This Flooring Calculator is general-purpose (hardwood, laminate, vinyl, tile). The Carpet Calculator accounts for carpet roll width (12 or 15 ft) and seam placement, which adds waste that this calculator does not.
- How do I measure a room with an L-shape?
- Divide it into two rectangles, calculate each separately, and add the results. Use the Square Footage Calculator for multi-section rooms.
