How this calculator works
This sod calculator estimates sod quantity in three steps:
- Lawn area: area length × area width (sq ft).
- Sod needed: lawn area × (1 + waste %). Default 5% covers straight edges and minor cuts.
- Pallets: sod needed / sq ft per pallet (default 500 sq ft/pallet).
Standard sod slabs are 1×1 ft (1 piece per sq ft). Commercial rolls are 2×4 ft (8 sq ft per roll).
Formula
area = area_length × area_width (sq ft)
area_with_waste = area × (1 + waste_pct / 100)
sod_pieces = ceil(area_with_waste × sod_per_sqft)
pallets = ceil(area_with_waste / sqft_per_pallet) [if sqft_per_pallet > 0]
Example
For a 50 × 30 ft lawn (1,500 sq ft), 5% waste, 1 piece/sq ft, 500 sq ft/pallet:
- area_with_waste = 1,500 × 1.05 = 1,575 sq ft
- sod_pieces = ceil(1,575 × 1) = 1,575 pieces
- pallets = ceil(1,575 / 500) = 4 pallets
Important assumptions
- Standard sod slabs: 1×1 ft (1 piece per sq ft). Commercial rolls: 2×4 ft (8 sq ft per roll).
- Standard pallet: 500 sq ft. Some suppliers use 450 or 600 sq ft pallets.
- Waste 5% for straight edges, 10% for curved or irregular lawns.
- Sod must be installed within 24-48 hours of delivery.
- For irregular shapes, divide into rectangles, calculate each, and add the results.
FAQ
- How much sod do I need for a 1,000 sq ft lawn?
- With 5% waste: 1,050 sq ft = 1,050 sod pieces (at 1 per sq ft) = ceil(1050/500) = 3 pallets (at 500 sq ft/pallet).
- How many sq ft does a pallet of sod cover?
- Standard residential pallet: 500 sq ft. Some suppliers use 450 or 600 sq ft. Check with your supplier before ordering.
- How much waste should I add for sod?
- 5% for rectangular lawns with straight edges. 10% for curved or irregular lawns with many cuts around flower beds, trees, or walkways.
- How long can sod sit before installing?
- Install within 24-48 hours of delivery. Sod left stacked on pallets will heat up and die. If you can't install immediately, unroll the sod in a shady area and keep it moistened.
