How to Calculate Sod Quantity

Sod is sold by the square foot or by the pallet. Calculating quantity is straightforward: measure the lawn area, add waste, and convert to pallets.

Step 1: Measure Lawn Area

For a rectangular lawn, multiply length × width:

Area = length × width (sq ft)

A 50 × 30 ft lawn = 1,500 sq ft.

Step 2: Add Waste Factor

Sod waste covers cuts at edges, curves, and around obstacles:

  • 5% (default): Rectangular lawns with straight edges
  • 10%: Curved lawns, irregular shapes, many cuts around beds

Sod needed = area × (1 + waste %)

1,500 × 1.05 = 1,575 sq ft.

Step 3: Convert to Pallets

Standard pallets cover 500 sq ft. Some suppliers use 450 or 600 sq ft pallets — check before ordering.

Pallets = ceil(sod needed ÷ sq ft per pallet)

ceil(1,575 ÷ 500) = 4 pallets.

Sod Piece Count

Standard sod slabs are 1 × 1 ft (1 piece per sq ft). Commercial rolls are 2 × 4 ft (8 sq ft per roll). If you're ordering by the piece:

Sod pieces = ceil(sod needed × pieces per sq ft)

1,575 × 1 = 1,575 pieces (slabs) or 1,575 ÷ 8 = 197 rolls.

Installation Timing

Sod must be installed within 24-48 hours of delivery. Sod left stacked on pallets generates heat and will die quickly. If you can't install immediately, unroll the sod in a shady area and keep it watered.

Use the Calculator

The Sod Calculator handles all of these steps — enter lawn dimensions, waste percentage, and pallet size for instant results.
