How Many Fence Panels Do I Need?
Fence panel calculation depends on the total fence length, post spacing, and panel width. Here's how to estimate materials for a panel fence (pre-built panels) versus a picket fence (individual pickets).
Panel Fence (Pre-Built Panels)
For pre-built fence panels, the calculation is straightforward:
- Measure total fence length in linear feet.
- Determine panel width — standard panels are 6 ft or 8 ft wide.
- Calculate panels: ceil(fence length ÷ panel width)
- Calculate posts: panels + 1 (one post per panel + end post)
For a 100 ft fence with 8 ft panels: ceil(100 ÷ 8) = 13 panels, 14 posts.
Picket Fence (Individual Pickets)
For picket fences, you need posts, rails, and individual pickets. Use the Fence Calculator for a complete material estimate.
The picket count depends on:
- Picket width (1×4 = 3.5", 1×6 = 5.5")
- Gap between pickets (0" = privacy, 2" = semi-privacy, 4"+ = ranch)
- Post spacing (8 ft standard)
Don't Forget Gates
Gate openings are typically 3-4 ft wide. Subtract the gate width from your fence length before calculating panels:
Panel length = total fence length − gate width(s)
For a 100 ft fence with one 4 ft gate: 100 − 4 = 96 ft → ceil(96 ÷ 8) = 12 panels + 1 gate.
Concrete for Posts
Each post needs 1-2 bags of concrete (60 lb). For 14 posts: 14-28 bags. Use the Fence Post Calculator for exact concrete estimates based on hole dimensions.
Use the Calculator
The Fence Calculator handles posts, rails, pickets, and waste. For solid panel fences (no individual pickets), set picket width to 0 in the calculator.
