Fence Post Hole Depth Guide
The depth of your fence post holes determines whether your fence stands straight for decades or starts leaning after the first winter. Here's how deep to dig for every fence type and soil condition.
The 1/3 Rule
The general rule: fence post holes should be at least 1/3 of the total post height (above ground + below ground). For a 6 ft fence (post extends 6 ft above ground), the hole should be at least 2 ft deep — making the total post 8 ft.
| Fence Height | Above Ground | Below Ground (1/3) | Total Post Length |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 ft | 48" | 16-24" | 6 ft |
| 6 ft | 72" | 24" | 8 ft |
| 8 ft | 96" | 32" | 10-11 ft |
Frost Line Considerations
In cold climates, post holes must extend below the frost line — the depth at which groundwater freezes in winter. If a post sits above the frost line, frost heave can push it upward, causing the fence to lean.
| Region | Frost Line Depth | Recommended Hole Depth |
|---|---|---|
| Southern US (FL, TX, AZ) | 0-6" | 24" |
| Central US (TN, NC, OK) | 12-18" | 24-30" |
| Northern US (NY, IL, WA) | 36-48" | 36-48" |
| Canada / Mountain West | 48-60" | 48-60" |
Check your local building code for the frost line depth in your area.
Hole Width: The 3× Rule
Hole width should be 3× the post width:
- 4×4 post (actual 3.5"): 10-12" diameter hole
- 6×6 post (actual 5.5"): 16-18" diameter hole
This gives enough room for concrete to surround the post completely.
Gravel Base for Drainage
Add 6" of gravel at the bottom of each hole before setting the post. This prevents water from pooling at the base of the post, which causes rot. The Fence Post Calculator includes the gravel estimate automatically.
Concrete per Post
A 4×4 post in a 12" × 24" hole needs about 1.4 cu ft of concrete — roughly 3 bags (60 lb). Use the Fence Post Calculator for exact estimates based on your dimensions.
Call Before You Dig
Always call 811 (Call Before You Dig) at least 48 hours before excavating. They mark underground utility lines for free. Hitting a gas or power line is dangerous and expensive.
